Manchester City of the English Premier League (EPL) is targeting Japanese forward Takefusa Kubo.
“City are keen to get a closer look at Real Sociedad winger Kubo,” British outlet TeamTalk reported on Tuesday (April 30).
Kubo has been recognized as a talented player since his youth. As a youngster, he played for FC Barcelona’s youth team for four and a half years. Real Madrid spotted him and signed him from J-League side FC Tokyo in July 2019.
Despite arriving at Real Madrid with high expectations, Kubo was not given enough opportunities. He bounced around on loan to several clubs, including Real Mallorca, Villarreal, and Getafe. At Mallorca, Kubo was paired with South Korean hopeful Lee Kang-in.
Last summer, Kubo parted ways with Real Madrid for good when he moved to Sociedad for €6.5 million. Last season, Kubo stepped up his game with nine goals and nine assists in 44 games across all competitions. Kubo’s impressive form at Sociedad has led to speculation of a return to Real Madrid. According to Spanish outlet Pichajes, Real Madrid have a 50% ownership interest in Kubo. Kubo’s buyout clause is €60 million ($856 million), but he can be bought back for €30 million ($42.8 million).
Man City are also interested in Kubo. According to TeamTalk, City asked to watch him in the derby against Athletic Bilbao about a month ago, where Kubo scored a goal.
