South Korea’s U17 national team, led by Byun Sung-hwan, is on the brink of elimination from the FIFA U17 World Cup 2023. After losing 1-3 to the United States and 0-1 to France in their first and second round matches in Group E, the red flag has been raised. They’ll have to play for a third-place wild card, but even that will be very difficult.
For South Korea to make it to the round of 16, they will first need to see the results of the other Group F match on Aug. 18. In the New Zealand-Mexico match, the Kiwis need a draw or better. Currently, New Zealand has two losses and Mexico has one draw. If Mexico wins and moves to 4 points, South Korea’s hopes of advancing to the round of 16 will be dashed.
If New Zealand picks up a point against Mexico, there is hope for South Korea. If South Korea beats Burkina Faso in their next game, they will advance to the round of 16. With three points, they can finish fourth out of three in the group. They would have to beat Indonesia (2 points) in Group A and the third-place finisher in Group F (New Zealand or Mexico) to get on the last train to the Round of 16.
A dramatic run to the Round of 16 would see them face either Group D’s No. 1 Argentina or Group A’s No. 1 Morocco. Both Argentina and Morocco sit atop their respective groups with 2 wins, 1 loss, and 6 points. Meanwhile, by Day 17, all of Group A through D had concluded. Morocco and Ecuador from Group A, Spain, Mali, and Uzbekistan from Group B, England, Brazil, and Iran from Group C, and Argentina, Senegal, and Japan from Group D have qualified for the Round of 16. The round of 16 matchup between Ecuador and Brazil has already been decided. The first- and second-place finishers in Group E and the first- and second-place finishers in Group F will qualify for the knockout rounds based on the results of their group matches on April 18. It will also determine the last remaining Group 3 wild card. Byunsung Hwanho will look to claim the last wild card.
